Going on to open a successful Mobile hair dressing business for over 3 years. In 1984 Diane landed a job with Ocean trading, a cruise liner company, and flew of to America to join the cruise ship "Fairsky" docked in San Pedro, California. The 6-month voyage travelled between San Francisco to Alaska and Los Angeles and Acapulco in Mexico. Diane met a cockney lad on board; sax man Benn Clatworthy who lived in L A, and was later to became her husband.

After disembarkation Diane flew home to England to spend the Christmas with family and friends. Ocean Trading called her there to invite her to join the "Illiria" docked out of Piraeus in Athens, Greece. Diane was on her way to Venice on 23rd and spent Christmas day visiting St Paul's Basilica and square, flying on to Athens in the new year of 1986.

Over the next 10 months Diane had the most exciting and interesting time, the world was opening up before her very eyes, visiting some of the most extraordinary and beautiful place Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Egypt, Papa New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Mombassa, Sey Shells, Maldives, and the Islands of Melanesia, Trobian, Solomon, and Fiji. Diane a natural photographer captured the moments forever, as the journey unfolded. She was introduced to Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, Many seed had been planted and she needed answers to what she had witnessed yet not always understood. In September of 1986 she joined Benn in L A and set up home. It was very difficult to leave family and friends in what seemed a more permanent stay. Yet she always new that one day she would return. And live again in England.

A member of the Echo Park Artists and she would participate in the annual Studio Tour Exhibitions. Peter Shires lived just around the corner and many up and coming artists lived in the area.
