In the town centre of Veliko Turnovo is the "Monument of the Perished in the Wars". Russia-Turkish 1877-78, Serbian-Bulgarian 1885, Balkan War 1912-13 and the First World War 1915-18. At the centre of the monument, a constant fire is kept alight, symbolising the honour and gratitude that the people of Veliko pay the dead warriors. the monument is best known as the "Mother Bulgaria".
